Welcome!

Hi all and welcome to my first blog! Unfortunately I open with some sad news. My good friend and neighbour Astrid lost her battle with breast cancer last night aged 45. She was originally diagnosed at 39, and a month after I was diagnosed in 2008, it was discovered she had widespread metastases.

We compared mastectomy scars and prostheses, went bandanna shopping, and had chemo together for six months. She was the only other person I knew with breast cancer- we were like partners in crime. She leaves behind a loving husband and two teenaged sons.

It is Astrid and her family to whom I dedicate my 2010 MDC walk.

I will do my best to make my subsequent blogs light and fun, and I look forward to hearing from any women who would like to contact me :)

  1. Hi Karlee,
so you are training to be a nurse - tried that many years ago but wasn't made of the right stuff so hats off to you - especially with all you have been through. I may not have completed my training but I still kept my nursing friends - for the past 36 years (eek is it really so long ago?)!!! So I hope your nursing buddies are supporting and sponsoring you! Good luck.

  2. Hi Catherine, thanks for your comment!

I was already doing nursing training before I was diagnosed, so i'm not sure if I would have chosen it had I been diagnosed first!

So many people say to me they could never be a nurse. I say to my teacher friends I couldn't be a teacher. I couldn't tolerate all those kids every day (and I certainly don't want to do paediatric nursing either!) hehehe.

Thanks for your support- Karlee xoxo
